b. 1949 Val Bertoia is a pioneering sound sculpture artist and engineer whose kinetic works transform movement and resonance into immersive sensory experiences. Val's work continues and expands the legacy of his father, the renowned metal artist and designer Harry Bertoia. Raised in a family where creativity, craftsmanship, and exploration of sound were part of daily life, Val’s earliest years were shaped by an environment that seamlessly blended art and invention. In the 1960s, Val studied mechanical engineering, developing the structural understanding and material sensitivity that would later inform his artistic practice. In 1972, he joined his father at the Bertoia studio in Pennsylvania, beginning a formative six-year collaboration. Together they worked on large-scale metalworks, including the now-iconic Sonambient sounding sculptures; pieces that merge visual form with a resonant, meditative acoustic presence. Harry often relied on Val for technical insight, and their partnership forged the foundation of Val’s lifelong dedication to sculptural sound. Following Harry Bertoia’s passing in 1978, Val maintained the Bertoia studio and continues to preserve the family’s artistic heritage. Val’s sculptures are built from carefully soldered vertical rods (typically bronze, copper, or beryllium copper,) anchored into metal bases and tuned through subtle adjustments in length, thickness, spacing, and alloy. When touched or moved by air, the rods produce shimmering tonalities that feel both natural and otherworldly. His works are not static objects; they are spatial instruments, designed to be experienced physically, visually, and sonically. While deeply rooted in the world his father pioneered, Val’s artistic voice is distinctly his own. His pieces often explore more playful rhythms, experimental harmonics, and variations in form. Over the course of his career, he has created nearly 3,000 sculptures, each documented, numbered, and uniquely crafted. His practice reflects a balance of engineering precision and poetic intuition, a harmony of structure and spirit. Today, Val Bertoia remains committed to creating art that inspires reflection, healing, and connection. Val Bertoia's sound sculptures speak with a unique voice, one that has earned a place in significant private and public collections, including major museums. Val’s sculptures continue to evolve, balancing technical precision with intuitive play, and positioning him as an influential figure in the world of contemporary sound art.
